A Place to Come and Play: Mandalay
Why the attractive Mandalay as someone once wrote me? Because a web site is a place. And Mandalay was an important trade route and a gateway to a land of adventure. Because too few people know about Mandalay. Because my mother was born in Saigang the port to Mandalay, and so I too came from my mother's port.The road to Mandalay is typically seen through western eyes. It was immortalised by Rudyard Kipling a English man. And so I too, half English as well Burmese can only see Burma as an outsider, for all that my Burmese relatives welcomed me with open arms.
So take a peek at a map of Burma courtesy of your friend and mine, the CIA. The official Myanmar web page is very slick but try the lonely planet guide for a more realistic portrait. It asks the question Should you visit Myanmar during "Visit Myanmar Year"? For me the answer must be yes I must visit as often I can, because I have relatives there, but for others it's not so easy.
